Through a grant from the federal government, the Sandy Hook Lighthouse is being restored. The work that is being done includes the following:
- All loose exterior paint is being removed from the walls. The stained area near the top will also be removed. The exterior walls will be repainted white.
- All cracks in the cement at the tower base will be repaired. The brick ground gutter will be rehabilitated and the drain pipe cleared.
- All of the electrical and emergency battery equipment will be removed from the watch deck. This equipment will be moved to the garage, at the rear of the property.
- The lightswitch inside the main entrance will be removed as well. Added in its place will be a new thermostat for a new exhaust fan.
- A new bronze railing will be added.
- New fiberglass lintels will be installed in the top four window shafts.
- All rust will be removed off of the stairs, and the cast iron stairs, landings, and support pins will be repainted.
- All loose and peeling paint will be removed from the interior.
- A new fan will be installed in the botom portion of the lowest nort window for ventilating the tower.
- Only craced or severly deteriorated steel parts of the existing window frames will be replaced. New wood sashes and frames will be installed.
- The existing flush wood door will be replaced with a historic looking solid wood panel door.
- All cracks on the concrete steps and landing will be repaired and painted.
- The flat seam metal roof and flashing will be removed and replaced.
- All exterior electrical boxes and wiring will be removed.
- The emergency light and pole will be removed.
- Cracked and broken plate glass will be removed from the lens house.
- The lower metal panels and vents in the lower portion of the lens house will be replaced.
- The lens house door and hardware will be removed and rehabilitated.
- The lightning protection system will be repaired.
- The interior of the ventilation system in the copper ball will be cleaned.
- All paint from the interior of the lens house will be removed. All exterior surfaces will be repainted.
- All of the roof scuppers will be made operable.
- The outside wrought iron railing will be rehablitated and reinstalled.
- New sandstone deck slabs will be installed at the perimeter of the lens house.
- The lighthouse keeper's barn/carriage house will be restored to its historic appearance. The left side will be a wayside exhibit shelter, housing a short video about the lighthouse and some exhibit panels. The right side will be converted into the backup emergency generator system for the lighthouse, maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard.
